Estimated Recovery Time After Dental Implant Surgery

Team Dental Implants

Dental implant surgery is a life-changing procedure that can improve your oral health and brighten your smile. During the procedure, the periodontist replaces one or more missing teeth with implants that look and feel like natural teeth.

Getting dental implants is considered a major dental procedure. As such, it takes time to completely heal from the surgery. Before you get your dental implants, be sure to know the typical recovery time, factors that can change that timeline, and what you can do to aid in the recovery process.

Typical Recovery Time After Dental Implants

Healing after dental implants is a multi-stage process. After all, it is surgery. However, the process is quicker than many people assume.

Most people can eat soft foods as soon as an hour after the surgery. This hour usually gives the gums enough time to form protective clots over the wounds. At this time, it’s important to keep drinking cold or room-temperature liquids from a straw. Stick to soft foods – nothing crunchy or sticky.

After 24 hours, you can start trying some firmer foods. If something causes pain, go back to softer foods and give your mouth a little more time. Easing into your normal diet can help the healing process.

Most people go back to work or their daily lives within one or two days. By then, the most painful parts of the healing process are done. Most people can eat, drink, and speak as they normally would.

Although you may feel fully recovered after just a few days, your body remains hard at work to heal all the way. After about three to six months, your mouth should be completely healed. At this time, you can get your permanent crowns after you complete an implant follow-up appointment with your periodontist.

Special Cases for Dental Implant Recovery

Every mouth is unique, so recovery times are estimates based on averages. As such, your individual recovery time may be longer or shorter. Your healing may look a little different if you:

  • Are on blood thinners or have any bleeding disorders
  • Have a bone graft as part of your procedure
  • Are more advanced in age

Only your periodontist can give you a more personalized estimate of recovery time after dental implants. Be sure to ask about healing procedures during your consultation.

Caring for Dental Implants During the Healing Process

It’s vital that patients play an active role in their dental implant recovery. As your mouth adjusts to the implants, you should:

  • Practice excellent oral hygiene
  • Avoid tobacco and smoke at all costs
  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water daily
  • Follow all instructions from your care team
  • Attend all follow-up appointments

By taking extra care of your mouth during this time, you increase the chances of dental implant success.
